That’s why the American Red Cross of Minnesota and Dakotas region is rallying volunteers to install free smoke alarms, create escape plans and share fire safety information as part of our nationwide Sound the Alarm events and Home Fire Campaign to help save lives.

It Could Have Been a Whole Lot Worse: Smoke Alarms Save Family’s Lives

Audra was cooking dinner for her son and family friends when a dishtowel caught fire. “It was pitch-black in the house,” she said. “You couldn’t breathe, and it was just to the point where we thought the whole house was going to go up. I just thank God for the [smoke] alarms.”

Red Cross volunteers had installed free smoke alarms in Audra’s home five months earlier through the Home Fire Campaign, which aims to prevent fire tragedies. Learn more about the campaign at http://redcross.org/homefires.
